The Book of Enoch, or 1 Enoch, was one of the most widely read texts within Judaism in the centuries leading up to the birth of Christ. Elements of the Book of Enoch were influential on the writers of the New Testament, and Enoch was quoted by St. Jude in his Epistle. While Enoch fell out of favor with later Rabbinic Judaism, it remained a major source for theology throughout the first millennium, long after it was relegated to the apocrypha and left out of the Christian Old Testament. This course will discuss the reception history of the Book of Enoch and give an overview of the contents of the book, especially as 1 Enoch influenced the New Testament, the Church Fathers, and Orthodox Christian theology.
