The Letters of St. Athanasius: Preparation & More

Description: In their booklet, St.Benedict of Nursia, the Editors of St. John of Kronstadt Press wrote, in the introduction to the Rule, "It is... fitting that this Rule should be put into the hands of Orthodox readers, monastic and lay alike... for neither for St. Benedict nor for true Orthodox life is there any radical division between monastic and "secular" piety. Some small part of the Rule is concerned with matters peculiar to the internal life of the monastery itself... but most of it addresses matters which should be of concern to anyone seeking to live a life in Christ."
Building upon the teachings of St. Basil the Great, St. John Cassian, St. Augustine, and others, St. Benedict gave structure and direction to those, "whoever you may be, who are renouncing your own will to do battle under the Lord Christ, the true King, and are taking up the strong, bright weapons of obedience" (Prologue). In this "virtual" retreat, we will explore two key elements of St. Benedict's "school for the service of the Lord" (ibid.): "serving under a Rule and an Abbot," (Chapter 1) understood as having a stable "structure" and interpersonal "accountability" in support of Christian growth and prayer.
