- The Lord of the Rings
- Selected chapters of The Silmarillion will be assigned for certain sessions
- Beowulf (any translation is fine, but Tolkien's is preferred)
- Tolkien's essay "Beowulf: The Monsters and the Critics"
- Tolkien's essay "On Fairy-stories"
